Does anyone have any photos of the instruments they use? I know they use old stereo equipment, radios, etc, but does anyone have any images or documentation? Thanks!

for real real, I'm sure if you found some label or WE-related website/myspace, you could e-mail or message them directly and they may be able to tell you something. I really don't know personally. You might be able to see something in some youtube videos too.

Though I expect grim results, I found Nate Young's e-mail address and asked him for any information or pictures. It's gonna be sweet if he responds with some...

man freakin tell us if you find out,
i've been lookin at interviews and he's not to clear,
i know for sure the only real "gear" they use is cheap behringer/radio shack mixers, and dod delay for their drum machine live (recording they prefer tape delay),
but i think its just oscillators,
besides the guitar and bass,
and the contact mic'd metal/gongs

I never got any response. His gal e-mailed me back saying he was out of town, and he'd e-mail me when he got back, but that obviously never happened. After seeing what was recently put out from AA Records, I'm assuming the bulk of odd sounds that I'm attracted to that they make come from bent and broken old radios. I read in an interview once that some members still stick gum and other odd objects into the instruments to hold things together and what not, which I find to be absolutely awesome.

Quick update on this if anyone is interested- I had the pleasure of catching Wolf Eyes, as well as Graveyards and Hair Police the past month. In regards to Wolf Eyes, John Olson mostly got sounds out of what appeared to be some noise generator into his mixer, in which he had all patched up to oscillate (I'm not sure of the technical terms for doing this, but it was channels all patched and looped and what not), and then played horns of all sorts. Nate Young mostly used the same setup with a mixer, and then of course stumbled around growling into a mic. Finally, Mike Connelly just played guitar and cassette tapes. I wasn't as impressed with the setup as I thought I'd be, considering most of their sounds that I was curious about were pre-recorded for the show.

Olson's setup was the same for Graveyards, but, considering Graveyards more quiet sound, he did have only a 5 inch speaker attached to his mixer. Their drummer had a big spring spread across his timpani (I hope I spelled that right) that was miced up, or picked-up, as he played it with a bow.

If anyone is interested, I did record the Graveyards set- when I saw Wolf Eyes, it was too damn dark.

(It starts off a bit sloppy, but improves quickly)

When Aaron Dilloway was in the band he used (and still does to really great effect solo) 8-track cartridge players and recorders for looping and tape cutup type stuff.
