Quick update on this if anyone is interested- I had the pleasure of catching Wolf Eyes, as well as Graveyards and Hair Police the past month. In regards to Wolf Eyes, John Olson mostly got sounds out of what appeared to be some noise generator into his mixer, in which he had all patched up to oscillate (I'm not sure of the technical terms for doing this, but it was channels all patched and looped and what not), and then played horns of all sorts. Nate Young mostly used the same setup with a mixer, and then of course stumbled around growling into a mic. Finally, Mike Connelly just played guitar and cassette tapes. I wasn't as impressed with the setup as I thought I'd be, considering most of their sounds that I was curious about were pre-recorded for the show.
Olson's setup was the same for Graveyards, but, considering Graveyards more quiet sound, he did have only a 5 inch speaker attached to his mixer. Their drummer had a big spring spread across his timpani (I hope I spelled that right) that was miced up, or picked-up, as he played it with a bow.
If anyone is interested, I did record the Graveyards set- when I saw Wolf Eyes, it was too damn dark.
(It starts off a bit sloppy, but improves quickly)
