internal/external clock

everytime i try to build something with an internal clock, that also will accept trigger signals as an external clock, the external triggers dont advance the sequence. is this a common problem? i was thinking of just building the int clock on a seperate circuit to see if that helps... if i skip the internal clock the external triggers work just fine.
i'm using a 555 for the internal clock to drive a 4017... the trigger pulses are +5v triggers from a 707
