In my eBay browsing today I came across sunpec, which is "yet another china-based electronic parts seller", except with some really excellent prices.  In particular, the metal film resistors are the best price I've ever seen, and at a digestible quantity.  The cap assortments are also a good price, and pretty much all of their perfboards are a steal.  The main thing to notice is that even though it's China-based, shipping is often free, and only 5-10 days, which is not much more than domestic.  These kind of stores seem to pop up all of the time... does anyone know of any other good ones?

http://www.dealextreme.com has some interesting things at low cost and 'digestible quantity'. Less on the side of technical electronic components and more on the side of random gadgets to rip apart and some circuit boards for "Cree and SSC Emitters".
This is what brought me to the dealextreme site(also China based) -->

Hi Colin: I've bought from them as well. I stocked up on all kinds of transistors months ago, and IIRC, I bought several transistor packs from sunpec.  I would buy 25/50/100 lots of my favourite transistor variety. I got sick of having to make special orders for these commodity parts. When you can get 100 for $3.59 with free shipping, how can you lose?

I also order from mouser.com. But on the paperwork, the parts often come from China anyway. As long as you get genuine parts, who can argue?  So far, my transistors and chips have been good ones.

I do find that most of the China vendors ship very quickly to Canada (by air). OTOH, if you order from Taiwan or Hong Kong, it can take up to 8 weeks to arrive in Canada. So obviously the shipping varies.

I have also bought a whole assortment of ceramic caps in every available value from about 5 pf up to about 0.02 uF cheap. It's a great way to get stocked up and saves a lot of time when building!

I have saved some other vendors on my eBay account, but I have to run. If I have time, I'll try to see what is there.

I'd be interested to see the other sellers you have saved.  I've found that ordering parts from anywhere in Asia is a little bit of a crapshoot... sometimes it can take a week, sometimes it can take two months.  My general rule is that you just basically can't order from Asia if you're in a hurry!

Most of my stuff comes from bitsbox.com (UK) but thinking of trying Tayda (situated in Thailand).

In no particular order, I have the following electronics eBay sellers saved:

- cn-resource (China)
- cole-0520 (China)
- eccomponents (China)
- goodbuy7888 (Hong Kong)
- sunpec (Hong Kong)
- tayda2009 (Thailand)
- tedchen1632 (China)
- tinxi-english (China)
- usacircuits (USA)

A few others I saved no longer list any items, so I didn't bother listing them here.

As mentioned before, I find that China ships fast to Canada (and probably to the US as well). I find with Hong Kong and particularly Thailand, you need to be patient.  At one point I was ready to give up the shipment for lost, and then it came a week or so later.

I wonder if China subsidizes it's shipping. It obviously goes by air immediately.

I actually placed my first Tayda order earlier today!  I splurged on 7 day shipping.  We'll see if it actually is here within a week.

How much did that add to your order?  It'll likely make a huge difference.
