Hello all,

I have a completed Bullet SE-01 Sound Effects kit that I got from my dad (he bought/built it back when it was in new 1978). He gave it to me when I first got into electronics thinking that maybe we could house it and outboard all the controls. I'm getting to where I would like to take on this project, but wanted some advise. I'm pretty unfamiliar with Modular Synth setups (I usually deal with just one oscillator for my projects) so was wondering the best way to set this up control wise. Besides the board mounted trim pots (going to replace with regular size) and the 3 dip switches (going to replace with toggles) there are little metal pins you can use with alligator clips to patch together the different parts of the circuit. I was thinking I could replace those with RCA or Banana Patch Bays, but wanted to get some more experienced opinions.

This is an image of the layout (not my image). In the layout the little spots marked with the triangle shaped markings are where the patch pins are.

Thanks!

Hmm.. those patch pin labels are not as I'd expect.  Are you sure you're supposed to just patch them together willy-nilly or are they more to be used for test points?  Either way, banana jacks are probably more commonly used with synthesizers than RCA.  1/8" and 1/4" cables are also used.  The latter three have the advantage over banana that they are shielded, although using alligator cables would also not be shielded.

The best way to learn is to experiment.  Try it first, then learn from what went wrong.

To be completely honest I'm not 100% sure. I remember using the board that way, but it's been a long time since I played with it, and I'm not sure if I was doing it correctly or not, but I did get sounds out of it that way.
A scan of the instructions can be found here under "construction articles" if you want to take a peek at them.
