Greetings  Colin, Members, Honored Guests, and Single Cell Organisms.

I was looking for some references and found you posted the pdf the Gibson had sent me when I purchased my Gibson 1977 RD Artist.  Very cool! I hope others find the concept as inspiring as I did when I first learned of this amazing guitar.

What makes this guitar so special? The Moog Guitar Electronics!!

Gibson being one of the biggest names in guitar strategically hooked up with "moog" hoping to re-capture ground that electric guitars were apparently loosing to the new synths and keyboards .

The result was the launch of a new line of electric guitars and basses in 1977 called the rd series named after the research and development team which brought electronic circuitry to gibson instruments for the first time .

Three RD electric guitar models were made ( RD Standard , RD Custom , and the gibson RD Artist) , one of the more interesting features of these guitars is that some were fitted with a bob moog compression and expansion preamp .

Unfortunately the previous owner of my RD pulled out the moog electronics and converted it to a straight inactive guitar.   Cry Embarrassed Angry

So as the story is, I now have the schematics and on a quest to re-create the PCB and return my RD to its once glorified beginnings.

The cavity that hold the board in the guitar is huge.  Below are some pics.

The first is actually mine hanging in my office.
And the other is a picture i found on the internet of the back of the pc board that should be in there.

I have yet to find a picture of the front of the board.  If anyone finds one please post.

So,  thats my story.  Wish me luck- I'm going to need it!

As always be safe!

You could fit a whole lot of other stuff in that cavity!  It is probably easier to re-create the circuit using perf board than it is to re-create the PCB itself.

Colin,  I cant agee more.

When Bob designed this board the parts were huge,  and there was quite a bit of space inbetween.  I have been able to imagine by photo-shopping the back pictures and zooming in on the layout.  Kinda reverse engineering it from that perspective.  there is also a secondary cavity that used to house the 2- 9v batteries.  I'm thinking with the right PCB layout design and maximizing multiple layer and microelectonics, I could potentially have room for a guitar to vc interface, 16 step sequencer, LFO, ring mod, VCF, VCO, Sample Hold, Etc.

My mother-in-law is living in there right now,  so her and the cats will have to hit the road.  Shocked

Colin,

have you seen the new radio and servo microelectronics technology for these R/C helicopters?  I just bought an Align T-Rex MICRO, thinking i was buying a toy to mod.  It's Not the kinda toys in the kyosks at the outlet malls. I was blown away with the main board of this thing.  and the functionality is truely a sight.  And they are lighning fast.  The metal/ 2 channel, fiberglass $80 hover bugs at the malls are truely inferior to Aligns new Trex design.

You may not be the inthusiast that I am about electronics,  but what else do circut junkies like me do when they're too drunk to play guitar??  We fly R/C helicopters! Shocked

here's a link:

I imagine they would have to be pretty complex and efficient, packed into a small space... but I'm afraid I don't own any.
