Hey ive been playing with tape heads from a load of catalog freebie tape machines ( my grandma receives allot of cheap electronic  junk like radios that look like cd players etc )  I pulled out the heads and attached them to this simple pre-amplifier circuit then plugged it into a hifi, It works pretty well but I cant get enough gain from the circuit ( i have to put hifi on max volume ). I was wondering if im doing it right theese things are passive right? just a coil? and i was wondering if anyone else had tried? can you get a tape head to write buy passing current through it? i read read were the same as write heads just optimized for the job.  ive never used op-amps how much gain can you get out of them? sorry if you feel like telling me to just go read a book!

i have been waiting this topic about tape heads.

you could start by building this pocket amp for any small projects that need little amp

How to Build the CMoy Pocket Amplifier

then you could make something like this dot matrix mellotron

or you coudl make tape sequencer
download the samples and youl love it
(those pages are the worst ever but the gadgets are neat)

í´m planing to make something out of old fax and tape heads (but it might take some time because i have so much other projects)

I like this tape sequencer.

So you record a constant-tuned tone on the tape or what ?

what about the reponse-speed of the motors ? there must be a lot of Glide (which sounds fantastic I think)

anyone here as build one ?

PS: It looks DAMN good too !

check out these sound samples :
sample one
sample two
in the first sample in the tape is recorder speaking and its used as the vocals on the track

in the second sample there is guitar playing recorded and you can hear how sick it sounds - that's not even near real guitar sound -
 but its awesome

constant tune can work as well but you can experiment when you are done  whit the hardware

haven't build one yet but this sequencer can be moded to work whit tape decks

link
just ignore the gate because you don't need one on tape sequencer.

and read this topic :toy sequencer

or we can just start another topic on tape sequencer
