Just wondered about those pesky cheap pots. Fisrt off, its a 6mm knurled shaft, yes? Second, are they all PCB mount? Lastly, what are your experiences with reliability, general ruggedness, and finding suitable cool cheap knobs for these suckers? Thanks for any input, i am just really tempted to stock a whole crapload of values as i am starting to do billion knob synth stuff as opposed to 3-4 knob guitar pedals. Thanks,

Take a look at http://www.eaced.com , just about everything there is using futurlec pots.  They are rugged, reliable, and fairly small.  The knurled shaft size fits most no-set-screw knobs you throw at it, and if it won't fit, you can either squeeze the two sides together so that it is smaller or use a screwdriver to separate them a little.  THey will also fit any set screw knob (well, not 1/8" ones of course).  I highly recommend them.  Ther eis quantity discounts for 25 or more (goes down to .45 I believe).  They are kind of PCB mount, take a look at the picture-definitely can mount on a PCB, but they are not right angle, so they can't mount on the same PCB as say, your 3pdt switch.

I just got a bunch of these a few days ago, and the first thing I noticed is that they don't have the little holes in the solder tabs. They seem to work fine, nonetheless, but if you're really used to the kind with the little holes, you  might not like 'em.
