I am looking to construct a solder fume extractor for myself based on the entry I saw at getlofi ("Low cost fume extractor" post from august 2005). I have a small computer fan, about 2" by 2", and the label says that it takes 12v DC.

I was hoping to power this with a 9v battery. It does spin when I hook it up directly to the battery. Now, do you think tht the 9v will provide enough power for the fume extractor? I'm assuming that the 9v will not make the fan spin as hard as 12v would.

Thoughts on this? I don't really want to mess with outlet voltages.

Yes, it is likely that the fan is not blowing as hard.  It could still be extracting fumes OK though.  You could use a wallwart power adapter to 12V DC, if you don't wantt o build your own supply.  There are also 12V batteries out there... though they won't run for very long.  You would be better off buying a couple and putting them in parallel to get longer life out of all of them.
